Ignite Tampa Bay Barry Ezell
Audiobooks are a B / year industry that have so far resisted the changes that rocked the music, movie, and print publishing industries. The movie and music industries were challenged by peer-to-peer networks, decreasing costs to produce and distribute content, and upstarts like Netflix and iTunes. Traditional publishing is being shaken to its core by authors self-publishing on Amazon’s Kindle and Lulu. Price pressures as described in Chris Anderson’s books, “Free” and “The Long Tail” have affected them all. However, audiobooks are still expensive, dominated by a single company (Audible), and return meager profits to authors. I’ll describe why this is, why you should care, and how the walls are beginning to crumble.
